Special Effects - Channel Letter Backlights
When channel letters are placed on a raceway, or have a backplate Signs Manufacturing™ can enhance the visibility of your sign to your customers with the use of Backlights.
We place illumination, neon or LED, between the channel letters and the wall to cause the wall to light, drawing the eye to your sign, and adding dimensional depth to channel letters at night.
Single-color, multi-color, or color-changing.
Some of this can be done quite inexpensively, but in all cases your sign will stand out from your neighbors'.
We will discuss these options with you when we design your sign.
Click on the "Neon" and "Spectralites™ and LED" tabs one page up ("Lighting Choices") to learn about the differences in these lighting options.

Different LEDs for Different Uses
Every individual LED bulb is designed for a specific purpose. As an example, the design of an LED for a flashlight is different from a LED designed for an LED electronic sign. One is designed to focus all light straight ahead, the other to disperse its light evenly in all forward directions.
Significantly, almost all LEDs are not designed to meet a strict color-match. Most back-lighting LEDs are designed to light a colored plastic.
Did you know that an LED that is superior at lighting channel letters with plastic faces is not the best choice to light a channel letter or sign cabinet with translucent vinyl or digitally printed graphics on a plastic or flexible sign face; or for creating the halo around a reverse-channel letter?
Most sign companies do not know this. In fact, the wholesale suppliers that supply virtually all sign companies do not even carry use-targeted LED products. For them, it’s “…one size fits all…"
We use SolarBrite ™ Color-Correct™ LEDs which are specifically designed for these use-targeted applications. Their light output has a color-corrected wave length; superior for lighting translucent colors from behind.
We always use the proper LED to give our customers the best sign possible…Guaranteed.
HALO-RING™ Channel Letters compared to Halo-lit, Backlit, or Reverse-lit Channel Letter Signage
Halo-lit. reverse-lit and backlit channel letter sign nomenclature is frequently used interchangeably to describe a sign where lighting emanates from behind, creating a soft glow, often called a "halo effect". This is confusing, and incorrect.
These are distinct letter styles. All these letter-styles provide an upscale, 3D appearance compared to front-lit-only channel letter signs, but there are significant visual differences.
Backlit, or reverse-lit channel letters refers to a diffused, general lighting emanating from behind an individual channel letter. The letter faces can be either opaque or internally lighted. Each letter is spaced off of the wall to allow light to softly illuminate the wall behind and around each letter. These letter styles do not create a "halo."
HALO-RING™ Channel Letters can combine front illumination, or not, with their powerful backlit SignFace™ exposed rear ring, delivering unmatched visibility and depth. Each letter is mounted over a custom oversized acrylic backer, mounted flush to the wall, creating a halo ring around the letter, that captures and amplifies the reverse lighting, creating a bright, defined halo — not the soft, diffused glow typical of standard backlit signs.
The result is a sign that:
-
Stands out from a distance
-
Appears brighter and more legible at night
-
Creates a premium, high-end architectural look
