Calculating the Length of a Message

"Block" letters (Helvetica, Georgia, etc.) average 80% of their height in width.  A 20" tall letter averages 16" wide.

Extended letter styles are longer, condensed styles are shorter.

When calculating approximately how long and tall a message can or will be remember to include the spaces between the letters, between words, and space both before and after the message for readability purposes if it is being displayed on a background (sign face.)
