Paints and Metal Finishes
New paint products have been introduced which increase the apparent light output of neon and LEDs in channel letters by 100%, and even light distribution, but do not affect the lifetime nor increase the energy consumption of the lighting at all. Signs Manufacturing™ uses Solar Finishes™ "Bright Reflective White" paint inside every set of channel letters we produce. However, the "Bright Reflective White" family of paints use different formulations based on the type of lighting being incorporated in the sign. Our "Bright Reflective White" for neon lighting is different than "Bright Reflective White" for LED lighting, is different than "Bright Reflective White" for HID lighting, etc. This is why lighting retrofits in signs, for instance changing from neon to LED lighting, can never be as bright as a new modern sign. Signs Manufacturing™ also uses the new Signlux Paint Systems™ paints and two-part primer systems. The entire channel letter sign will be epoxy primed, then finished with Signlux™ modern acrylic urethane automotive type finish coats, to insure that it continues to look good for many years. Even though these paints and primers are five times more expensive the long-term results are well worth the price. In fact, the same paint types are used by BMW, Ferrari, Rolls Royce, and many other luxury automobile manufacturers to paint their cars! Does It Last?Back in the mid 90s Signs Manufacturing was building all signage for Whataburger. At the time, Whataburger was a family-owned business but it had one Franchisee, Randal. He purchased all of his signs from Signs Manufacturing and had us help him create a unique Whataburger look with a new design for his pole signs, some bold colors, etc. He was also extremely careful about making sure everything was lighting 100%. He, personally, drove past every store he owned in Texas (later he expanded to Florida and we shipped signs out there too) and made note of any parking lot lights or signs that had outages. Then he called us and we dispatched a truck to go fix everything immediately. Incidentally, we offer this service to businesses now so you don't have to do what Randal did. Randal was extremely concerned with the appearance of his stores. He knew that the stores had to look perfect all the time if he was going to be successful. That's why he always bought from Signs Manufacturing. We work hard to make sure our customer's signs ALWAYS look good so they don't have to worry about things like outages, fading, peeling paint, etc.
It was our "Flying W" design that Randal loved but the Corporate-Owned stores never adopted. This photo was taken in 2019, at least 21 years after the sign was originally installed! It has never been refaced or repainted ... but it still looks brand new! That's why we use SignLux™Paints. Randal has long sense retired and sold his stores back to Whataburger. How SignLux™ Compares to Regular Automotive PaintBut, Signlux™ offers many advantages over “automotive” paint when used on signs. Our painters are factory-trained and certified. Our painting is virtually blemish-free. Painting air is cleaned and dried twice before entering the paint booth, and again before painting. Our state-of-the-art paint booth, 25’ by 25’ by 16’ tall, with full-sized entry/exit doors on each end, filters the air coming into the booth as well as the air discharge. See for yourself! This Whataburger location was installed in the mid 90s in
Cedar Hill, Texas. Normally our Permitting records will tell us when
this sign was installed, but it was so long ago that it pre-dates our
current permitting records which go back to 1998 ... so I don't know the
precise year this sign was built.
