Types of Outdoor Signs You Can Use to Promote Your Business


It has been documented many times that outdoor signs create over 50% of the average retail store’s business.

How big do you want that 50+% of your business to be?

  1. Storefront Signs
    Usually these are the more-modern look of 3-dimensional internally lighted individual letters installed on the walls of a business; they are called channel letters. Internally lighted box signs with translucent faces are also common. All can be manufactured in many different shapes and sizes. Wall signs can also be non-electrical or lighted from an external source, some wall signs are just flat metal or wooden panels with graphics, but these types of signs do not generate as much customer traffic in most instances.

  2. Blade Signs/Projecting Signs/ Under-canopy Signs
    These flag-mounted signs mount perpendicular to a building’s wall. They are helpful for pedestrians finding a business’ entrance from a sidewalk, and can be lighted or unlighted, manufactured in any shape and/or size.

  3. Awnings
    Usually constructed of aluminum or metal frames and covered with canvas, translucent vinyl, or metal. The store’s name is usually displayed on the awning. Lighting is usually added to translucent awnings. Awnings promote your business and give your customers shelter as they’re entering your business.

  4. Window and Door Graphics
    Vinyl window and door graphics will draw your customers attention. They advertise your services, hours, and products.

  5. Window Vision
    Video projections on window glass, visible from the outside of the window, promote a business’ products and services. Because they have motion they attract a great deal of attention.

  6. Sidewalk Signs
    Sidewalk signs generally have an “A” frame and the ability to change your sign, or they’re a whiteboard so you can change your message on your sign. These small signs are portable. Sidewalk signs attract pedestrian traffic’s attention.

  7. Pole Signs and Pylon Signs/Billboards
    Free-standing, detached, single-pole pole signs and multi-pole pylon signs are large signs designed to be seen from a distance. They are installed close to streets. Usually they are internally lighted to increase their effectiveness. Many times they feature, or include, full-color digital electronic message center signs because full-color and moving message signs attract more attention.

  8. Monument or Ground Signs
    Free-standing, detached, monument signs, sometimes called ground signs, sit on the ground and have relatively low profiles. They come in many different types of materials like brick, concrete, wood, or high-density foam. These types of signs are usually placed at an entrance to a parking lot, development, or building. They might list a single company on the sign or list a number of the tenants in a complex. Usually they are internally lighted to increase their effectiveness. Many times they include monochrome or full-color digital electronic message center signs as a part of their construction.

  9. Directional signs
    These kinds of signs provide information where people can find specific businesses and entrances in a complex.

  10. Vertical Advertising
    Because so much of the average consumer’s product searches involve computer searching, and because Google and others often include not only a picture of the front of a business location, but a satellite view of the store’s location, vertical advertising is becoming more popular. Lighted or unlighted large signage placed on the rooftop of a business provides additional free advertising.

  11. Vehicle graphics
    Vehicle graphics increase business exposure, even when parked. When parked in proximity of the business they increase the perceived importance of the business.

  12. Parking Lot/Driveway Advertising
    Durable graphics applied to the surface of a parking lot or driveway using parking-lot (durable) paints promote a business’ products and services.
