Someone can sell you signs but not be licensed to install or service them. Unless the electrical signs are UL-listed or ETL-listed, they cannot be legally installed in Texas under state consumer protection safety laws. Some city ordinances have exceptions, but beware: buying unlisted signs can create legal and safety problems.

Sign permits in Fort Worth depend on the sign type, zoning district, sign area, overall height, setback, frontage, illumination, and whether the sign is attached to a building or freestanding. The following is a general summary of Fort Worth sign permitting considerations for wall signs, monument signs, pole signs, pylon signs, and electronic message center displays.

Because Fort Worth sign regulations can vary by property, street classification, zoning district, and site conditions, Signs Manufacturing can help review your proposed sign and coordinate the permit process before fabrication and installation.

Electronic Message Center Displays in Fort Worth

Fort Worth has special requirements for electronic message center displays, also called EMCs, LED message centers, or digital signs.

• EMC units must go through a special exception process.
• EMC displays may be limited to 25% of the advertised area.
• Messages may change no more frequently than once every 20 seconds.
• EMCs must be installed on a monument sign or pylon sign.
• EMCs generally cannot be mounted directly on a building.

Wall Sign Permits in Fort Worth

Wall signs are commonly used for storefront signs, channel letters, cabinet signs, tenant signs, and other building-mounted business signs in Fort Worth.

• Wall signs must have a disconnect that kills both the hot and neutral conductors before power reaches the sign.
• For walls up to 15 feet tall, the allowable sign area may be based on 10% times the wall height and wall length.
• For walls over 15 feet tall, the maximum sign area may be 1.5 times the length of the facade.

Non-Advertised Area Requirements for Pylon Signs

Monument signs in Fort Worth are commonly used for business parks, churches, retail centers, office buildings, medical offices, schools, and commercial properties.

• Monument signs are generally allowed in commercial and industrial districts.
• Maximum height is generally 8 feet.
• Maximum width is generally 16 feet.
